Perthshire Brass crowned Best Third Section band at Northern Counties

Perthshire Brass were crowned Best Third Section band at the 2019 Northern Counties Brass Band Association contest held at Loch Leven Community Campus on Sunday 2nd June 2019.

The band's 20-minute entertainment programme impressed adjudicator Alan Fernie who placed the band sixth overall, and first out of the three competing third section bands. A varied programme included Sandy Smith's arrangement of Cuban Boy (best known as the theme tune to Still Game), You'll Never Walk Alone from Carousel, a dexterous performance of Black and White Rag featuring the band's principal percussionist, Iona Crosby on xylophone and Alan Fernie's arrangement of The Beatles' classic, Hey Jude. The band then closed their programme with Hootenanny, a tribute to the band's founder George Annan Snr.

Conductor George Annan was pleased with the band's performance, saying "We really enjoyed our day at the Northern Counties contest and I was really proud of how the players performed. With such a busy schedule, it has been a real challenge for our players to keep up with the demands of our busy band. Winning our section was a nice way to end the day, and it sets us up nicely for the summer."

The band now prepare for their next engagement, their 2019 Annual Concert, which is to be held at St Matthews Church of Scotland, Tay Street, Perth on Sunday 23rd June at 19:30. Further details are available on the events page.
